HayesBen.jpgBen Hayes
Ben began his career at the Times in 1975 as a part-timer in the mailroom, now known as the Packaging department. He quickly moved up through the leadership ranks in the Packaging department. In 1985, Ben was promoted to insert manager. Five years later, he was named Packaging and Distribution Manager, with additional responsibility for Press Distribution. In 2002, the Transportation Department shifted to Operations and Ben’s oversight. In May 2005 he was promoted to Operations Director, responsible for all production, home delivery distribution and facilities management.  Early in this role he worked with Operations and other managers to help transition to a digital workflow, moving from paste-up to a paginated system that allowed the move to computer-to-plate equipment and controls to preset the presses.

He helped bring a formalized team approach to the managing the Postpress departments starting in the mid 1980s that focused on organizational improvement in quality, productivity and staff morale. Ben has served as coach and facilitator for several of the company’s diversity and leadership programs. He has led a number of major projects that include a Y2K software replacement, a companywide end-to-end study that tightened deadlines and improved on-time performance, and a dock expansion that automated part of the distribution process. Recent initiatives include bringing a process improvement methodology to Operations and working with key stakeholders to create a broader-based safety philosophy.
Ben volunteers on several hospice-related boards, including: vice chairman of the Suncoast Institute; board chairman of Suncoast Hospice; and vice chairman for Empath Health, the parent for the Suncoast Hospice and affiliates.  Ben is a graduate of Eckerd College with a bachelor's degree in Management.
